Guitars

When I was a teenager, I bought an ancient 50's Hofner archtop guitar which had the neck snapped off right at the body; that was the only way I could ever afford it. I cobbled it back into shape with a combination of large screws, Araldite and filler, and in return it taught me how to play.

I ended up being in a series of bands, and I played all the time, right up until I finished art college about seven or eight years later; that guitar held together through a lot of abuse, accidents and rough car journeys.

When I got my first real job, it all kind of fell away, and I didn't really play at all for a few years afterwards, mainly because I was working so much of the time.

But the guitar sat there all that time and waited for me. When Sarah and I split, I was at a pretty low ebb. I picked it up again and started writing songs; a therapist couldn't have done a better job.

A while after that I bought two other acoustic guitars - an Ibanez, and a Fender, the first brand new guitar I have ever owned (despite having played for at least 10 years).

But that Hofner still “sleeps” next to me on it's stand in my room, and even though I've got two other guitars which are much newer, nicer sounding, and far easier to play, I still pick it up nearly every night and have a strum, because I feel like it deserves it.

Sounds a bit weird, right? Anyone else own any objects they'd almost consider friends?

I, for one, would only like to apologise for my part in abusing said guitar.

Stu, you are the Hof's nemesis. How many times did you try and kill it?
