I won't deny that I don't read as many books as I should (because I have a PS2 and GBA) but I read this one over the weekend. Started it on Saturday, finished it on Sunday - an unheard of accomplishment for me, given that I am not the fastest reader by a long way, have a miniscule attention span and have 2 new PS2 games. Anyway, I really couldn't put this one down and there's not been many other books that qualify for the privilege of my maintained attention *. Its amazing. Read it. If I say any more about it I'll end up spoiling it.

* 3, to be precise: Consider Phlebas; Moonfleet; and another one I can't remember the title of, but it's about a boy with an alien inside his head that talks to him and teaches him stuff, so his Mum and Dad think he's mad but it seems real, especially when it takes over his body in order to save his drowning sister. Anyone else know this one?

Consider Phlebas, that's such a great book!
The Curious Incident of the Dog. Was that the adult or the childrens version?

Hehe, I am assuming its the grown-up version - kids books don't normally say fuck or bugger. Seriously though, read it.

Sarah got me to read Consider Phlebas and I thought it was excellent.
I'm always on the lookout for more good reading material though... the problem is, I read abnormally fast and books are costing me a fortune!
I'll check it out next time I visit Waterstone's and have a tenner in my pocket.

I'm waiting for Oryx and Crake to come out in paperback after your recommendation, Mark (and don't say cheapskate - I'm still a student).
My favourite bits of Consider Phlebas: the assualt on the temple of light by Horza, Kraiklyn and the other mercenaries; Horza's fight with Kraiklyn; and the final fight against the Idirans. Badass.
And I still can't remember what that other book was called.

Mark - don't spend your money on new books all the time, second hand book shops are great and sooo cheap!
Trouble is you end up buying 4 books instead of one...

I recommend reading childrens books. I've read a lot of them recently (I had to and now I love to) and some of them are so well written.
The problem is, I'm starting to buy books like I buy DVD's and on £6000 that doesn't leave me much for booze and food. Joining bol.com has helped (try looking there, Mark).
Try 'His Dark Materials', by Philip Pullman (the trilogy that came third in the Big Read).

Bill, you're going to have to rent another place just to hold DVD's soon...
I already get most of my books from sales or secondhand shops; weirdly enough the Costcutter supermarket down the street from where I work has a big selection of books for 99p, and I've got some good 'uns from there.
