The 'Quiet Pint' Phenomenon

By Mark on Friday 2 May 2003 at 12:13

Today we started the day with a fried breakfast at the café over the road, which helped me to get over my hangover.

It's weird how you get caught up in the flow of things. Last night, I was all set to have a nice early night, but first I had to finish off the flyer designs for the latest Call of the Wild night.

Ben came round just after I'd eaten, and we got the designs and poster done quite quickly. Then Alan turned up. Then we went and got some beer from the corner shop, and then before I knew it, it was 1am and I was drunk, and in a club. So much for the early night…

But it just happens. It's like the 'quiet pint' phenomenon; when someone says those immortal words:

“Shall we go out for a quiet pint?”

Now everyone knows this just isn't possible. Every time someone's said that to me, without exception I've ended up vomiting in someone's sink at 3am, with the unconscious bodies of my friends strewn about the rest of the house. You go out with the honest intention of having one or two pints and a chat…

As far as I can tell it just can't be done.

Mark, When will you learn? Why don't you try giving up the booze?

Sorry, I don't know where that came from. I'll be in Plymouth tonight. Fancy a quiet pint?
