The mother of all hangovers… Again

I don’t know what happened this weekend. Friday night; one minute we were resigned to a quiet night in front of the telly, the next it was 4am, and I was downing Absinth with some Portugese guys, one of who subsequently threw up on my lounge floor.

Saturday was pretty much a write-off, except for a visit to Callington to put a fridge in my Dad’s van, so he could bring it into Plymouth today.

Today I had to do all the stuff I should have done yesterday, but couldn’t because my head hurt so much that I could only open one eye.

So there you go. That’s the story of my weekend. Anyone else have any more exciting tales they’d like to share?

Kavi, what is SARSstock? I hope its not the celebration of severe acute respiratory syndrome. All the singers would just be coughing all the time.

As for my weekend, I have a confession to make...

It all started when I tried some modest overclocking, to make my AMD 2400+ run as a 2600+. My memory is running faster now too. However, upping the FSB has made my motherboard hotter - so I thought I'd put another fan in the case, get some air going over it. No spare slots. Cue the internet: loads of how-to's for making a blowhole. I cut a hole in the top panel and put in a fan. Motherboard dropped 10 degrees. Job done. Or so I thought. Looking round some of the sites that provided these guides, “case modding” is a very serious matter to some people. And some of the things they do to their machines look rubbish. And some are ridiculous But some look good. So I spent my Saturday afternoon putting a perspex window in the side panel of my PC. Sad, I know, but there's something very rewarding about a small project that bears no practical use. I found the 3 or 4 hours it took very therapeutic. Next weekend's taken care of too - I have some EL Cable and a few blue LED's on order. I know its the PC equivalent of putting alloys and a spoiler on a Nissan Sunny, but it keeps me busy and off the sofa (hence, sober).

So it all works? Cool.

I'm currently trying to take as many fans out of my PC as possible (or replace them with quieter ones). When I turn on my PC it sounds like a cross-channel hovercraft has started up in my room...

That 'antiqued' mod that looks like an old boiler is cool!

Mark, if you're fans are a bit loud, try the “7-volt trick”. There are some other tricks to quieten it down in that site too. Works for me and it hasn't upset the voltages either.

Or you could go to water cooling...

Hmm... not sure I want water sloshing about inside my computer... the other trick looks good though.

The way I was looking at involves one of the Zalman 'flower' heatsinks (basically a super-efficient heatsink) and a really large diameter fan, which revolves more slowly for the same airflow (thus less noise). Bit expensive though...

Think I'll take some pliers to my PC tonight... thanks Matt.

Mark, just one more thing: the pins in the molex plugs have two little catches on opposite sides. Use a straightened out paper clip to push in the little catches on the side. Bend them right in, one at a time, and the pin will drop out.

It took me a while to figure this out (sure, it looks easy now) so I thought I'd save you the hassle. Remember to bend them back before you replace them so they lock in.

haha, SARSstock was a benefit concert which 450, 000 ppl attended last wednesday in toronto, to bring back money and tourism for our city. it included the guess who, rush, ac/dc, and the rolling stones as headliners with 11 other bands for only $21.50. it was a great concert, which was from 12pm to 12am...let alone i got home at like 3-4am because of 450, 000 ppl leaving at the same time...it was supposedly the largest concert in north america - even bigger than woodstock.
