Broken Glass

During a 4th year biology lesson at school, I got a pipette stuck in my hand. Predictably, the end shattered leaving shards of glass in my bloody palm. Anyway, I thought I got most of it out at the time, and went to see the school nurse: “No, it'll be fine, if there's any glass left in there it'll work its way out” she told me.

Since then, I've had a bit of a bump on my palm that hurt when I pressed it, but I assumed it was just a scar from said incident. That was over 10 years ago.

Over the weekend, I scraped my palm (including the bump) doing some work on the house. I was picking at it yesterday (I know, “don't pick it, you'll make it worse”Wink and saw something - with a pair of tweezers I managed to ease out a half-submerged circular piece of glass, not unlike the broken end of a pipette. It was about 1mm wide and 2mm long and has obviously been in my hand since 4th year. Stupid school nurse.

Saying “don't pick it, you'll make it worse” to a bloke is like a red rag to a bull...

And rightly so. I mean, if you'd listened to that, you'd still have a bit of glass in your hand, wouldn't you?
