Sarah and I made good use of our day off; we spent a good few hours walking round Paignton Zoo. I haven't been to a zoo for years, and the conditions for the animals have improved massively, which is good.
We spent a lot of time watching the meerkat population, and quite a while watching two lion cubs play with their mum. My favourite part though, was the reptile nursery, where the zoo is breeding lots of different species of rare reptiles which are either endangered, or no longer exist at all in the wild.

Zoo's are entirely under-rated as far as I'm concerned. And your gallery is amazing Mark.
A lot of people say its cruel because they're not in their natural habitat, but the conditions in any zoo I've ever been too have always been great. Besides, if the zoo's didn't bring the animals in to the public eye, I doubt there would be half as much support for animal protection and endangered species charities.
Somehow though I always end up imagining and discussing hypothetical contests between animals. (I once had a week-long arguement over who would win in a fight between a lion and a tiger, which was only eventually settled by an email to “The Really Wild Show”.)

Yeah, it's kind of a compromise between keeping animals in captivity and losing some of them altogether.
So who would win? You can't just leave it there!

Hehehe. Its not as simple as you might think...
Apparently the result would be very circumstantial. First, it would depend on which kind of tiger and which kind of lion. Assuming the biggest and baddest of both, the siberian tiger weighs in far heavier than the african lion and has a huge reach advantage. However, lions normally roam in packs as opposed to the solo tigers, giving them strength in numbers. Also, both the species are very territorial and so there is a huge “home advantage”. And they are used to different terrain too. In such a conflict, it would rarely, if ever, come to blows, as one of them would back down.
Anyway, however unlikely, if it was a one-on-one fight to the death on neutral ground, my money would be on the tiger.

Well, now I know. If ever I'm faced by a snarling lion, I'll just whip out a tiger and hide behind the nearest rock...

Pity I couldn't get any photos of the Tigers at Paignton; it was a bit cold for them that day I think.
