I have to work with some nasty chemicals - hydroflouric acid (instantly dissolves your bones) or nickel (II) oxide (lung cancer if you breath anywhere near it) to name but two. But this article has made me realise that some people have it far worse than me. Having read it, I feel much better about my project, almost relieved.

If you really want to know...
Nickel (II) oxide is a constituent component of barium nickel niobate, which is the core study of my PhD project. Once the samples are sintered, I use hydroflouric acid as an etchant - it dissolves away the areas around the grain boundaries, revealing the microstructure for examination.

There were some pretty nasty chemicals in the darkrooms when I was at college... powdered selenium (used to mix toner) is apparently highly carcinogenic, and when you mix it with water it smells of wee (ammonia)...
Still, at least I always knew I wasn't going to end up as a DYSENTERY STOOL-SAMPLE ANALYZER.
Now that's a SHIT job.

Incidentally, the author of that article is named William Speed Weed... just thought that was quite amusing.

how could anyone not like science?
granted there are dull aspects to any job but i can't think of many where you get to blow things up, disolve and melt stuff...

But Palmer, science is for geeks - in business you get to use cool phrases like “quality-driven fast track strategy”, “pro-active client-focused mindset” or “benchmark gap-analysis synergy”.
Did I say cool phrases? That must have been a typo, because I meant BULLSHIT.
