One Sentence(ish) Album Reviews 4

Been a bit slow on the old album-buying front recently (read: I'm totally skint), but as my eMusic subscription reactivated itself without me realising, I thought I might as well go on a bit of a downloading spree. And then I just bought some CDs anyway.

So here we are:

Beirut - The Flying Club Cup

Musical boy wonder once again incorporates seven hundred different instruments (possibly) on Balkan orchestral opus - all of which means nothing if it's crap. But it's not.

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes

Hyped to the point of ridiculousness by the music press, but not without reason; it's the folk Pet Sounds, but with more than three good songs (ooo... controversy).

Leonard Cohen - The Essential Leonard Cohen

32 songs of absolute lyrical genius married with some terrible musical treatments. 80's fretless synth bass and saxophone? Really?

Okkervil RiverThe Stand Ins

Second album from a band musically dissecting themselves and their industry (with no small amount of venom). Lyrics are Will Sheff's strong point, but the rest is good too.

Ryan Adams & The Cardinals - Cold Roses

Only a couple of clangers on otherwise great double album of sentimental country rock... if you like that sort of thing. Which I do.

Until next time, I bid you adieu.

Yeah...ok....I must admit, I do quite rate that song and...in all fairness....I probably prefer it to God Only Knows....ok....sold....three songs. Anyway, on a Leonard Cohen tip, may I suggest listening to his original version of Hallelujah ? It is breathtakingly dreadful in almost every way (youtube it). Thanks for the reviews Senor, I shall look forward to not remembering why they are on Napster playlists very shortly.

Yeah, that version of Hallelujah is on 'The Essential' (it's basically a greatest hits album).

Two words - “Sesame Street”.

Thanks Mark, will have to look them up proper later. Looking foward to it. I normally find something I like out of your reviews!
