500° and rising

This has not been the best working week; our main internet-facing firewall fried itself at the weekend, which meant that all our hosted websites (about 100 or so, some of which are very busy e-commerce sites which take hundreds of pounds a minute) were totally unavailable for nearly three days.

A new hardware firewall was nigh-on impossible to source, and the fact it was the weekend didn't help when it came to getting hold of support personnel...

You can just imagine how happy this made their owners.

To be fair, 99 percent of our clients were very, very nice about the whole thing; if you're losing money by the hour, due to something that's totally out of your control, you have the right to be irate!

However, there are always a few who just need someone to shout at, and because Ed and I were answering the phones we were in the firing line...

I think the best one I had was “well, don't you keep a spare?". Yes, we keep a spare, just like we keep a spare office out the back in case ours burns down.

Anyway, it's all fixed now, thanks to Pete and Mark who looked absolutely wrecked by the end of it all... well done guys.
